The Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya General People's Committee of Higher Education 7th October University Establishment of the University: After its foundation, 7th October University reached its first landmark when the Faculty of Basic sciences, Misurata was opened in September, 1984. Later, other faculties were established both in Misurata and Baniwaleed. The current status of 7th October University was formally established when the decree of the General People's Committee No. 200/2004 was issued. 7th October University is made up of the following faculties: 1. Faculty of Science, Misurata. 2. Faculty of Science, Baniwaleed. 3. Faculty of Arts, Misurata. 4. Faculty of Arts, Baniwaleed. 5. Faculty of Economics and Political Sciences, Misurata. 6. Faculty of Law,Baniwaleed. 7. Faculty of Medicine, Misurata 8. Faculty of Engineering, Misurata 9. Faculty of Nursing, Misurata 10. Faculty of Agriculture, Baniwaleed. 11. Faculty of Pharmacy, Misurata 12. Faculty of Education, Misurata 13. Faculty of Education, Baniwaleed. 14. Faculty of Medical Technology, Baniwaleed. 15. Faculty of Information Technology, Misurata Five departments are also included in faculties of the same discipline as follows: 1- Departments of Law, Misurata. 2-Departments of Economics and Political Sciences, Baniwaleed. 3- Departments of Medicine, Baniwaleed. 4- Departments of Engineering, Baniwaleed. 5- Department of Dentistry, Misurata General Administration: According to its establishment decree, the General Administration of the university is allocated in Misurata city, not far away from the city centre, and is divided into two complexes, A and B. Each complex building has four stories where all services, administrative and technical affairs departments are located. All these departments are fully equipped with modern facilities. General statistics: The total number of students of the university in this year is about twenty thousand, while the total teaching staff - the majority being Libyan and specializing in several different disciplines - numbers 961. The total number of the university employees is currently 948 and is spread over all the university faculties and its other facilities. Research and Training Centres: 1- The Research and Consultation Centre is comprised of the following institutions: - the Engineering Research and Consultations Office. - the Economic Sciences Research and Consultations Office. - the Bio-Sciences Research and Consultations Office. 2- Language Centre: The Language Centre delivers several language courses and is also part of a collaborative programme being conducted under the joint guidance of the General People's Committee of Higher Education and the British Council. This partnership programme has been set up explicitly in order to foster and develop English language teaching skills. Some other collaborative programmes in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute, the French Cultural Institute and the German Cultural Institute will also be added to these in the near future. Postgraduate Programmes: These postgraduate programmes commenced in 1986 and scheduled according to the academic programmes established by the Administration of Postgraduate and the Departments of the Faculties. By January 2008, the total number of Masters degrees attained reached 280. Moreover, other collaborative programmes with foreign uni- versities are also being planned or are already underway. Service Utilities: The university has service utilities, dormitories, a university hotel, housing complexes for teaching staff, a teaching staff club, a seven hectare farm in Tamina area as well as a 25 hectare one in Burwaya area. Academic and Cultural Activities: Several academic symposiums, meetings, conferences and general lectures were held during the last academic year as well as a recent Book Fair and Exhibition of student work. Members of teaching staff and some students have also participated in several local and international events. Other Activities: The university has tried to emphasise entertainment and sport activities, and there are currently active music and theatre groups as well as several sports teams. Graduates: The first groups of students to graduate were from the Faculty of Basic Sciences in Fall, 1987. Up to 2007/2008, the total number of the university graduates in several disciplines has now reached 15133. University Publications: The university regularly publishes books and reference materials. With the intention of introducing the faculties at Misurata and Benwaleed to potential students, a monthly paper entitled (7th October) and a half yearly magazine (Al-satil) are also published.
